Al Duhail and Sharjah Battle to 1-1 Draw in AFC Champions League
In a tightly contested match at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar, Al Duhail SC and Sharjah FC played to a 1-1 draw on March 15, 2024. This result leaves both teams with their hopes for advancement in the AFC Champions League Elite Round of 16 hanging by a thread, as they each accumulated eight points in the group stage.
Both teams entered the match under pressure, needing a victory to strengthen their chances of progressing. Al Duhail had suffered a setback in their previous match, losing 2-1 to Iranian side Tractor SC, while Sharjah fell to a single goal against Al Hilal SFC from the Saudi Pro League.
Match Highlights
Al Duhail created early chances, with Jean-Charles Castelletto nearly scoring in the sixth minute, directing a header just wide from Benjamin Bourigeaud‘s cross. Sharjah responded swiftly, as Matheus Saldanha forced a save from Al Duhail goalkeeper Salah Zakaria just three minutes later.
In the 10th minute, Al Duhail threatened again when Edmílson Junior had a close-range shot spilled by Sharjah goalkeeper Adel Al Hosani, but Adil Boulbina was flagged offside as he attempted to capitalize on the mistake. The home side continued to push forward, and in the 12th minute, a golden opportunity slipped away when Boubakary Soumare hit the left post after being set up by Edmílson.
Al Duhail’s missed chances proved costly as the match approached halftime. In the 41st minute, Zakaria brought down Luanzinho in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Igor Coronado converted the spot kick, giving Sharjah a 1-0 lead going into the break.
Second Half Action
The second half saw Al Duhail intensify their efforts to find an equalizer. Early on, Boulbina and Krzysztof Piatek troubled the Sharjah defense. However, Maro Katinic failed to score from a Coronado cross in the 50th minute, and Luanzinho’s header went agonizingly wide ten minutes later.
Al Duhail’s frustration continued when another goal was disallowed for offside after Boulbina received a pass from Luanzinho in the 62nd minute. Yet, the Algerian midfielder would not be denied a second time. In the 81st minute, he was brought down by Rafael Pereira, resulting in a second penalty. Although Al Hosani initially saved Boulbina’s first attempt, the referee ordered a retake due to the goalkeeper being off his line. Boulbina made no mistake with his second attempt, leveling the score at 1-1 and ensuring that both teams would share the points.
The outcome sets the stage for an intense conclusion to the group stage next week, as both Al Duhail and Sharjah will need to secure victories to maintain their aspirations of progressing in the tournament.
