Al Maqam showcased his exceptional talent once again by winning the Baidda Algaa Cup at the Al Rayyan Racecourse in Doha, Qatar, on March 15, 2024. The dark bay gelding, racing under the banner of Khalifa bin Sheail Al Kuwari, claimed victory in the Local Purebred Arabian Novice, completing the 1700-metre race for the second consecutive year.

Starting from a wide draw, the six-year-old faced an early challenge as he settled at the back of the pack. Jockey Pierre Charles Boudot expertly managed Al Maqam’s pace, allowing the race to develop before making his move. As the field approached the final stretch, Al Maqam surged forward, demonstrating remarkable determination. Despite a late challenge from Mared Al Zaeem, Al Maqam maintained his lead, finishing just a neck ahead.

Exciting Races and Notable Performances

After the thrilling finish, Saad Ali Al Kubaisi, Deputy Director of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) Registration & Studbook Department, presented the trophy to the winning team. The day featured several exciting races, showcasing the talent of both local and international horses.

In the Purebred Arabian Show Horses category, Nibras Al Marroona delivered an impressive performance, securing a length victory with jockey Salman Fahad Al-Hajri at the helm. The Thoroughbred Handicap (0-95) saw Corinth dominate the competition, as Alberto Sanna guided him to a commanding victory, finishing 7.5 lengths clear of the field.

The Purebred Arabian Handicap (60-80) proved to be a competitive race, with Lwich De Bozouls, also ridden by Boudot, narrowly edging out his opponents by a short head. Consistency was on display as Thouab Al Shahania, under Saleh Faraj Al-Otaibi, performed well in the Purebred Arabian Handicap (55-75). Meanwhile, Aaneef Zakhir triumphed in the Local Purebred Arabian Handicap (55-75), thanks to a well-timed ride by jockey Arnaud De Lepine, winning by a length.

In the Thoroughbred Handicap (0-70), Ruling Master impressed spectators with an authoritative five-length victory, again under the guidance of Salman Fahad Al-Hajri. The Local Thoroughbred Handicap (0-45) featured Malik and Soufiane Saadi, who showcased their skills by winning by two lengths. The day began with a strong performance from White Christmas, who, with jockey Louis Nomis aboard, secured a convincing 2.5-length victory in the Thoroughbred Maiden Plate.

The events at Al Rayyan Racecourse not only highlighted the skill of the horses and their riders but also underscored the vibrant equestrian culture in Qatar. With such thrilling competitions, the Baidda Algaa Cup continues to be a highlight of the racing calendar.
