FIDE Appoints Mohammed Al-Mudahka to Lead World Chess Olympiad
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has appointed Mohammed Al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation, to oversee the organisation of the next World Chess Olympiad, which will take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 10 to 24, 2026. This move underscores FIDE’s confidence in Al-Mudahka’s leadership and his significant contributions to the global development of chess.
Al-Mudahka’s appointment follows a successful World Championship held in Qatar last December, which showcased the nation’s ability to host major chess events. Preparations for the 46th World Chess Olympiad are already underway, aiming to deliver one of the sport’s premier international competitions.
Al-Mudahka’s Vision for the Olympiad
Expressing his gratitude for the trust placed in him, Al-Mudahka stated that it is a privilege to lead one of the most prestigious tournaments in the chess world. He thanked FIDE and the global chess community for their support and highlighted the contributions of FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and the federation’s leadership, who have been instrumental in enhancing competitions and expanding chess’s reach.
In his role as FIDE Director of International Relations, Al-Mudahka emphasized the federation’s commitment to promoting chess in Asia. He noted that Uzbekistan’s hosting of the Olympiad is part of broader efforts to strengthen the game’s presence across the continent, aligning with FIDE’s strategy to foster growth in developing regions.
Qatar’s Participation and Development Goals
Al-Mudahka confirmed that Qatar will field a national team at the Olympiad. He stressed that regular participation in significant international events is crucial for elevating the standards of Qatari players and accelerating their competitive development. This initiative reflects a larger commitment to nurturing local talent and enhancing the country’s reputation in the global chess community.
The World Chess Olympiad is expected to attract teams from around the world, contributing to the cultural and sporting exchange among nations. With Al-Mudahka at the helm, there is anticipation that the event will not only showcase top-tier chess but also promote the sport’s growth in the region.
