FIDE Appoints Mohammed Al-Mudahka to Lead World Chess Olympiad
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has appointed Mohammed Al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation, to oversee the organisation of the 46th World Chess Olympiad, scheduled to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 10 to 24, 2026. This decision underscores FIDE’s confidence in Al-Mudahka’s leadership and his ongoing contributions to the development of chess on an international scale.
Al-Mudahka’s appointment follows the successful hosting of the World Chess Championship in Qatar last December, which garnered praise for its organisation and execution. FIDE believes that his experience and vision will be instrumental in delivering a memorable Olympiad.
Preparation for a Prestigious Event
Extensive preparations are already underway to ensure that the World Chess Olympiad is a flagship event in the chess calendar. This biennial tournament attracts top players and teams from around the globe, making it a highlight for chess enthusiasts everywhere.
Expressing his gratitude, Al-Mudahka stated that it is a significant honour to take on a role at such a prestigious tournament. He thanked FIDE and the global chess community for their trust and support. He also highlighted the leadership of Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE President, noting the federation’s commitment to enhancing competitions and expanding chess’s global reach.
Focus on Growth and Development
In his current role as FIDE Director of International Relations, Al-Mudahka emphasised that the federation’s strategy prioritises promoting chess in Asia. He believes that hosting the Olympiad in Uzbekistan aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the game’s presence across the continent.
Al-Mudahka confirmed that Qatar will field a national team at the Olympiad, stating that regular participation in major international events is vital for the development of Qatari players. This commitment to compete on the world stage aims to elevate the standard of chess in Qatar and accelerate the competitive growth of its players.
The 2026 World Chess Olympiad promises to be a vibrant celebration of the game, showcasing talent from diverse nations. As preparations continue, the chess community looks forward to an event that not only highlights competitive excellence but also fosters international camaraderie.
