Qatar Clinches Spot in AFC U23 Asian Cup with Thrilling Comeback
Qatar’s U23 football team secured a place in the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026, set to take place from January 7-25, 2026, following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bahrain. The match, held at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium, showcased Qatar’s resilience as they overcame a late deficit and a red card to clinch their spot in the continental tournament.
Dramatic Comeback Seals Qualification
The match took a tense turn when Bahrain’s Abdulrahman Sami Al Khayyat scored in the 71st minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Despite being reduced to ten men after Ayoub Mohamed Al Ouwi received a red card, Qatar rallied in stoppage time. Goals from Al Hashmi Al Hussain and Jassim Al Sharshani in the ninth minute of added time completed an impressive comeback for Qatar.
Striker Mubarak Shanan emphasized the mental and physical challenges of the match. “It was difficult to face the strong Bahrain team, but we were able to defeat them and qualify for the Asian Cup,” he stated. This victory capped a dominant qualifying campaign where Qatar won all three matches.
Team Effort and Challenges
The win was a testament to the entire team’s collective effort, as highlighted by midfielder Abdulaziz Mohammed. “Everyone gave their all. We played with one heart as one team, from the goalkeeper to the striker, and the substitutes did not fall short,” he said, reflecting on the unity and determination that characterized their performance.
Teammate Mohammed Siraj, who scored in all three Group H matches, acknowledged the physical toll of playing three matches in just one week. “We knew about the fatigue and pressure on us, but we finished it with a score of 2-1,” he explained, underscoring the team’s ability to cope with the demanding schedule.
Despite the disappointment of defeat, Bahrain’s Mubarak Mohammed offered praise for the Qatari team. “Congratulations to the Qatari team. They put on a great match. We also put on a great match, but I think we lost focus at the end,” he commented, highlighting the competitive spirit of both sides.
With this victory, Qatar now looks forward to the upcoming draw for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, where they will join ten other group winners and four top runners-up, along with hosts Saudi Arabia, in the 16-team tournament. The team’s journey to the finals marks a significant achievement in their development and continues to build on their growing football reputation in Asia.
