Qatar Welcomes Top Chess Talent for 2025 World Rapid and Blitz Championships

The FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2025 will take place in Doha, Qatar, from December 29 to December 30, featuring some of the world’s top chess players. This prestigious tournament will showcase competitions in both rapid and blitz chess formats across men’s and women’s categories, with a total prize fund exceeding EUR 1 million.

Elite Competition and Participants

A total of 251 players will compete in the men’s rapid championship, while 254 players are set to participate in the men’s blitz event. The women’s tournament will feature 142 players, including reigning world champions and high-ranking experts in fast-paced chess.

The tournament will kick off with an opening ceremony on Friday afternoon, leading into the blitz competition as the first event. Among the notable participants are reigning classical world champion Gukesh Dommaraju from India, world number one Magnus Carlsen from Norway, and Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi, who is the 2024 world blitz champion. Other prominent players include Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, and Alexander Grischuk.

Additionally, several young talents will compete, such as Ivan Zemlyanskii, a 15-year-old Russian grandmaster, and Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, a 14-year-old Turkish prodigy who is among the youngest players in history to achieve a rating above 2600. Qatar’s representation includes international master Hussein Aziz, along with Khaled Al Jamaat, Hamad Al Kuwari, and Ibrahim Al Janahi.

Women’s Championship Highlights

In the women’s competition, the field is led by Ju Wenjun, a five-time world champion from China. Ju won the women’s blitz world title in New York in 2024 and is considered one of the favorites this year. She will be joined by former world champions Tan Zhongyi and Anna Muzychuk, as well as Alexandra Goryachkina and Bibisara Assaubayeva, a two-time blitz world champion. Former champion Kateryna Lagno will also participate.

Qatar Chess Federation president Mohammed Al Mudahka expressed pride in hosting this landmark edition, noting that it has attracted a record number of participants. He believes the tournament will enhance the standard of chess in Qatar by exposing local players to elite competition.

According to Arkady Dvorkovich, president of FIDE, the scale of participation reflects the excitement surrounding the championships, which he describes as among the most thrilling on the global chess calendar. He commended the local organizing committee for their efforts in presenting what promises to be an outstanding tournament.

Doha previously hosted the Rapid and Blitz World Championships in 2016, which gained acclaim for its competitive atmosphere and elite player turnout. The current event follows a particularly vibrant period on the international chess calendar, including the Chess World Cup and the Global Chess League, ensuring a high level of competition in Doha.

With over 400 players competing and a significant prize fund, the 2025 championships are poised to deliver exceptional matches, showcasing the best in rapid and blitz chess.

World number one Magnus Carlsen stated he is eager to defend his titles, highlighting his excitement about competing in Qatar. Although he stepped down as classical world champion in 2023, he remains the reigning champion in both rapid and blitz formats.
