Sheikh Joaan Elected President of Olympic Council of Asia
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani has been elected as the President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during a General Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. His election by acclamation comes with no contesting candidates, solidifying his leadership role in the sporting community.
As President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) since May 7, 2015, Sheikh Joaan has played a pivotal role in establishing Qatar as a leading force in global sports. His tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including the nation’s best-ever performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where Qatar secured three medals: a gold from Mutaz Barshim in high jump, another gold from Fares Ibrahim in weightlifting, and a bronze in beach volleyball.
Transformative Leadership and Major Events
Sheikh Joaan’s leadership has transformed Qatar into a prominent hub for international sporting events. The country will host the 2030 Asian Games, a testament to its world-class infrastructure and organizational capabilities. This marks the second time Doha will welcome the Asian Games, having previously done so in 2006.
Under his guidance, Qatar has successfully hosted an array of major competitions, including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the World Athletics Championships in 2019, and the upcoming World Aquatics Championships scheduled for 2024. These events have contributed to Qatar’s growing reputation as a destination for elite sports.
In addition to these prestigious events, Sheikh Joaan has overseen the hosting of the AFC Asian Cup in 2023 and the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021, enhancing the nation’s profile in regional sports.
Focus on Development and Legacy
Sheikh Joaan’s vision extends beyond immediate results. He emphasizes capacity building through the Qatar Olympic Academy, which focuses on training and developing sports professionals and administrators. His efforts align with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the “Ambition Without Limits” initiative, aiming to foster sustainable sports development.
The QOC’s strategic plan for 2023-2030 highlights athlete development, the promotion of Olympic values, and the role of sports in social development. In October 2022, Sheikh Joaan was also elected as First Vice President for Asia at the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), further solidifying his influence in the international sports community.
As he prepares to lead the OCA, Sheikh Joaan’s journey reflects Qatar’s commitment to using sport as a catalyst for growth and international engagement. His election is poised to bolster the Olympic movement across Asia, shaping the future of sports in the region.
Sheikh Joaan’s work has earned him recognition, including the Arab Sports Personality of the Year award in 2021, showcasing his impact not only in Qatar but across the Arab world.
With a calendar of 83 international events planned for 2026, including the World University Weightlifting Championships and the Asian Under-18 Basketball Cup, Sheikh Joaan’s leadership is set to leave a lasting legacy in the realm of sports.
