Trump Appoints Envoy to Pursue Greenland’s Integration into US

Former President Donald Trump has appointed Jeff Landry as an envoy tasked with promoting the idea of integrating Greenland into the United States. This initiative reflects Trump’s ongoing interest in the self-governing Danish territory, which he has previously described as strategically valuable due to its mineral resources and position between Europe and North America. Landry, who began his term as Governor of Louisiana in January 2024, has publicly endorsed the proposal.

In response to this development, both Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a joint statement emphasizing that Greenland is not up for annexation. “You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security,” they stated, reaffirming that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the US shall not take over Greenland.”

Trump’s announcement, made on his social media platform Truth Social, highlighted Landry’s understanding of Greenland’s significance to US national security. “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World,” he wrote.

The White House has not yet commented on the appointment or its implications. Landry expressed gratitude to Trump for the role, indicating it would not interfere with his gubernatorial responsibilities. In a post on X, he stated, “It’s an honor to serve … in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US.”

Greenland’s Strategic Importance

Greenland, which has a population of approximately 57,000, was formerly a Danish colony and has the right to declare independence under a 2009 agreement. Despite its autonomy, the territory remains heavily reliant on fishing and financial support from Denmark. Its location makes it crucial for the US ballistic missile defense system, while its mineral resources have drawn attention amid concerns about reliance on Chinese exports.

Prime Minister Nielsen addressed the announcement on social media, stating, “We have woken up again to a new announcement from the US president. This may sound big, but it does not change anything for us. We decide our own future.”

Diplomatic Tensions Rise

The appointment of Landry has prompted a diplomatic response from Denmark. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen announced he would summon US Ambassador Kenneth Howery for discussions, expressing concern over what he termed “completely unacceptable” actions from the US. “Out of nowhere, there is now a special US presidential representative, who, according to himself, is tasked with taking over Greenland,” Rasmussen told TV2.

Denmark has been working to strengthen relations with Greenland over the past year, investing in Arctic defense to address US criticisms regarding security in the region. Prime Minister Frederiksen remarked on social media, “It is a difficult situation that our allies for a lifetime are putting us in.”

Political science professor Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen from the University of Copenhagen commented on the matter, stating to Reuters, “This appointment shows that all the money Denmark has invested in Greenland, in the defence of the Arctic, and all the friendly things we have said to the Americans, have had no effect at all.”

As tensions escalate, the focus remains on how this move will affect US-Denmark relations and the future of Greenland’s autonomy.
