New Zealand Breakers’ Playoff Dreams End with Loss to Adelaide

The New Zealand Breakers’ hopes of reaching the playoffs for the National Basketball League (NBL) have come to an end following a narrow 92-89 defeat against the Adelaide 36ers at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on March 16, 2024. The loss marks the second consecutive year the Breakers will miss out on post-season play, bringing a disappointing conclusion to their season.

Facing a challenging path to the playoffs, the Breakers needed to win their remaining games, including an upcoming matchup against the Cairns Taipans, and rely on the Tasmania JackJumpers to falter. Even with those conditions met, a significant improvement in points percentage was necessary to secure a tie-breaker. This scenario was always a long shot, and the defeat against Adelaide confirmed their elimination.

The Breakers initially held a commanding lead, going up by 14 points early in the final quarter. However, the game turned dramatically as the 36ers, led by Bryce Cotton, who scored a game-high 42 points, surged in the last moments. Cotton’s impressive performance included 13 points in the fourth quarter, helping Adelaide outscore the Breakers 33-18 in that period and ultimately secure the victory.

New Zealand started strong, leading 29-16 after the first quarter and maintaining a 50-39 advantage at halftime. Key contributions came from Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who recorded 25 points, 7 assists, and 3 rebounds, and Izaiah Brockington, who added 19 points and 4 assists. Veteran player Rob Loe chipped in with 14 points, including four three-pointers, while Reuben Te Rangi scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.

Despite their efforts, the Breakers were without crucial players, including starters Sam Mennenga and Rob Baker, due to injury. Additionally, Next Star Karim Lopez has been sidelined for the season.

For Adelaide, Cotton’s performance strengthens his case for a sixth MVP award, as he shot 14 of 26 from the field and made 7 of 16 from beyond the arc. His teammates also made significant contributions; Dejan Vasiljevic scored 19 points, and former Breaker Zylan Cheatham nearly achieved a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists.

The Breakers now conclude their regular season with a record of 12 wins and 20 losses, leaving them with no playoff contention. However, they still have the opportunity to claim a trophy in the Ignite Cup, where they will face the same Adelaide 36ers next Sunday on the Gold Coast. The cup final offers a prize of A$300,000 for the winners, while the runners-up will receive A$100,000.

Following two narrow defeats to the 36ers, including a previous overtime loss of 112-110, the Breakers will be seeking redemption in the upcoming match. As their season draws to a close, the team aims to finish on a high note and secure a trophy that could provide a silver lining to an otherwise challenging year.
