New Zealand Breakers Target Rebuilding After Disappointing Season
The New Zealand Breakers are strategically planning for a stronger performance in the upcoming season after a disappointing finish in the 2025/26 Australian National Basketball League (NBL). The team ended the season in seventh place out of ten, a result that fell short of expectations set by president of basketball operations, Dillon Boucher, and new ownership when they took charge in March 2023.
While reaching the final of the Ignite Cup was a highlight that secured the team some prize money, the Breakers struggled significantly during the regular season. Boucher expressed his disappointment, stating, “I would be lying if I said we didn’t want to be in the playoffs this year and I believe we should have been and could have been.” He emphasized the need for a thorough review of all aspects of the organization, including the front office, coaching staff, and player performances, as they strategize for the future.
Assessing Performance and Areas for Growth
The Breakers exhibited a mixed bag of performances throughout the season, with notable highs and lows. They achieved three victories by margins exceeding 29 points, including a remarkable 42-point win against the Illawarra Hawks in October. However, they also faced significant defeats, losing three games by 30 points or more, including a staggering 41-point loss to Sydney in January.
Head coach Petteri Koponen, in his second season, acknowledged the inconsistency, stating, “We showed some really good stretches throughout the year, we had some upset wins and some bad heartbreaking losses.” He reiterated the need to identify the “margins” for improvement if the Breakers aim to compete in the playoffs next season. This sentiment was echoed by Sam Mennenga, a nominee for the NBL Most Improved Player, who highlighted the potential for growth and the importance of establishing daily principles to ensure success.
Boucher noted that despite the inconsistent results, the team managed to challenge their opponents regularly, indicating a foundation upon which to build.
Focus on Developing Local Talent
A key strategy for the Breakers moving forward includes a commitment to nurturing New Zealand talent while remaining open to international players who can enhance the team’s chances of winning. Boucher stated, “We will always try and recruit New Zealand talent, but at the same time made it really clear that we are there to win and we need to win games.” The current roster includes 11 New Zealand players of varying experience levels, reflecting the organization’s intention to develop local talent.
As they look to the future, the Breakers face crucial decisions regarding their coaching staff and roster. Koponen’s future with the team remains uncertain, and Boucher indicated that all coaching appointments would be reviewed in the off-season. The club currently has only three players, including import Parker Jackson-Cartwright, under contract for the next season, allowing for a fresh approach as they prepare for free agency.
Looking ahead, Boucher aims to solidify key positions and secure talents that can contribute positively to the team’s dynamics. The departure of Karim Lopez, who is expected to enter the NBA draft, represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Breakers. His performance during his time in the NBL’s Next Stars program showcased his potential, and Boucher expressed interest in recruiting another player of similar stature.
In summary, the New Zealand Breakers are poised to embark on a rebuilding phase, focusing on enhancing their roster and refining their strategies to elevate their performance in the upcoming season. As they reflect on the lessons learned from the 2025/26 season, the organization is committed to fostering a culture of professionalism and competitiveness, ensuring they do not fall behind in the increasingly competitive landscape of the NBL.
