Breakers Edge Closer to Ignite Cup Glory with Key Final Ahead

The New Zealand Breakers have a chance to end a decade-long trophy drought as they advance to the final of the Ignite Cup. This opportunity comes after a series of favorable results, positioning them against the Adelaide 36ers on February 22, 2024, at the Gold Coast. Winning the inaugural Ignite Cup would be a significant achievement for the team, which is striving for playoff contention in the National Basketball League (NBL).

Claiming the Ignite Cup carries a substantial financial incentive, with the champions set to receive $300,000 and the runners-up $100,000. Notably, 60 percent of the prize money will go directly to the players, providing an added motivation for the Breakers, who are under new ownership.

Head coach Petteri Koponen, in his second season with the Breakers, acknowledges the difficulty of securing any trophy, stating that achieving success in any season is “not easy.” As the Ignite Cup final approaches, he emphasizes the need to focus on the remaining six regular season games before shifting attention to the cup match.

Koponen’s team faces challenges, particularly with injuries affecting their roster. Star player Sam Mennenga broke his wrist earlier in the season and will miss the remainder of the campaign. He highlighted the importance of players like Rob Loe and Max Darling stepping up to fill the gap left by Mennenga.

“It’s hard to replace [Mennenga], but they need to do their job and find their way to help the team,” Koponen noted. He stressed that success would begin with solid defense, which will enable the team to capitalize on opportunities in transition.

The Breakers are also without American import Rob Baker, who had been a key contributor. Koponen plans to adjust the game plan accordingly, but he remains confident in the depth of the squad. He intends to give increased playing time to players like Carlin Davison and Reuben Te Rangi, who have shown promise in recent games.

“Every game for us is like a final at the moment, so every game is important,” Koponen stated, emphasizing the necessity of treating each match with utmost seriousness. With the Ignite Cup final one month away, he remains focused on immediate challenges, starting with their upcoming matches against fourth-placed Melbourne United on February 16 and the Tasmania JackJumpers on February 18.
