Trump Appoints Envoy to Pursue Greenland’s Integration into US

Donald Trump has appointed Jeff Landry as a special envoy to advocate for Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, to become part of the United States. This development comes as Trump emphasizes Greenland’s strategic significance and rich mineral resources. Landry, who assumed office as Governor of Louisiana in January 2024, has publicly expressed his support for the initiative.

In response to the appointment, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a joint statement asserting, “You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.” They emphasized that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” firmly rejecting any notion of a US takeover.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his confidence in Landry’s ability to enhance US national security interests regarding Greenland. He stated, “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World.”

The White House did not respond to requests for comment regarding this appointment. Landry later expressed his gratitude to Trump via a post on X, noting, “It’s an honor to serve … in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana.”

Greenland’s Strategic Importance

Greenland, which has a population of approximately 57,000, has the option to declare independence under a 2009 agreement with Denmark but remains economically dependent on fishing and Danish subsidies. Its geographic location between Europe and North America is critical for the US ballistic missile defense system. Additionally, the mineral wealth of Greenland has attracted heightened US interest, aiming to lessen dependence on Chinese exports.

In a recent Facebook post, Prime Minister Nielsen remarked, “We have woken up again to a new announcement from the US president. This may sound big, but it does not change anything for us. We decide our own future.”

Growing Diplomatic Tensions

The announcement has escalated diplomatic tensions between the US and Denmark. Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Denmark’s Foreign Minister, stated that he would summon US Ambassador Kenneth Howery following the unexpected appointment of Landry. Rasmussen criticized the situation, stating, “Out of nowhere, there is now a special US presidential representative, who, according to himself, is tasked with taking over Greenland. This is, of course, completely unacceptable.”

In light of the growing tensions, Denmark has made efforts to mend its relationship with Greenland over the past year while seeking to address US concerns regarding Arctic defense. Prime Minister Frederiksen acknowledged the complexities of the situation, stating, “It is a difficult situation that our allies for a lifetime are putting us in.”

Political science professor Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen from the University of Copenhagen commented, “This appointment shows that all the money Denmark has invested in Greenland, in the defense of the Arctic, and all the friendly things we have said to the Americans, have had no effect at all.”

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact both Greenland’s future and US-Denmark relations.
