A T20 cricket match in Upper Hutt turned violent on the evening of March 30, 2024, following a disputed umpire decision that ignited a fierce confrontation between players. The incident occurred around 17:00 local time at Trentham Park during a match between the Hutt District Cricket Club Royal Blues and Upper Hutt United Cricket Club’s Bharat XI.

Video footage obtained by Stuff shows players from both teams engaging in physical altercations, wielding what appeared to be bats and stumps against one another. A witness, who chose to remain anonymous, reported that the conflict erupted shortly after a contentious umpire’s call prompted a verbal dispute that quickly escalated into violence.

Cricket Wellington confirmed that it was aware of the situation and is currently investigating the matter. In an official statement, the organization emphasized its commitment to the safety of players and participants. “Cricket Wellington takes all matters of player and participant safety extremely seriously, and at this stage, we are in the process of understanding exactly what occurred,” the statement read. “Once all relevant information has been gathered, we will follow the disciplinary process outlined in the Cricket Wellington Code of Conduct to ensure appropriate action is taken.”

The Upper Hutt Cricket Club also acknowledged the seriousness of the altercation, reiterating their commitment to understanding the full details of the incident. “At this stage, we are in the process of understanding exactly what occurred,” the club stated, adding that they would support the disciplinary measures once the facts are confirmed.

Match records from PlayHQ indicate that the Royal Blues won the match by forfeit after scoring 8 runs for 155 wickets in 20 overs. The Bharat XI managed to reach 1 run for 24 wickets in just three overs before the game was halted.

While the confrontation has raised concerns, local police reported they had not received any formal complaints regarding the incident. This situation highlights a growing need for stringent measures to ensure player safety and uphold the integrity of cricket in local leagues.
