Zelenskyy Embraces Civilian Style for Diplomatic Meeting with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy opted for a civilian-style suit during a recent diplomatic meeting with United States President Donald Trump. This choice marked a shift from the military attire Zelenskyy has worn throughout the ongoing conflict with Russia, representing a subtle yet significant evolution in his public image. The suit featured a back vent, a detail that, according to designer Anisimov, was intended to soften the president’s appearance and symbolize hopes for peace.
Zelenskyy arrived at the White House on Monday, August 24, 2023, where his attire drew immediate praise from Trump. The U.S. president complimented the suit, a stark contrast to the military-style outfits that had previously caused tension during their encounters. In February, during a difficult meeting in the Oval Office, Trump had publicly criticized Zelenskyy’s dark military attire, highlighting the need for a more diplomatic appearance.
“There was a slight sense of despair because they do not understand how we breathe, how we live,” Zelenskyy reflected on that earlier meeting. The change in his clothing seemed to resonate with the media as well; a reporter who previously questioned the president’s choice of attire now remarked, “You look fabulous in that suit.”
Anisimov emphasized that the goal was to present Zelenskyy as dignified, stating, “They praise, they scold. If we win—and we will win—then whose suit it was doesn’t matter.” This sentiment underscores the importance of maintaining a strong national image, particularly during international engagements.
The black suit was initially designed as part of a capsule collection for Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 24, 2023. Anisimov had been working on adjustments to the outfit when he received an urgent call from the administration requesting the suit for Zelenskyy’s trip to the United States. Anisimov has a history of shaping Zelenskyy’s style; he had not been in contact with the president for over five years until a mutual acquaintance reconnected them in January 2023. This led to the creation of a new collection meant to reflect versatility while incorporating elements from military uniforms.
While Anisimov downplayed the notion that the suit was specifically tailored for Trump’s meeting, he acknowledged that Zelenskyy has several similar jackets, each with minor tweaks. He noted that the military influence remains a strong theme in the collection, which is designed to adapt to various formal occasions.
Zelenskyy’s evolution in attire mirrors the significant changes in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Reflecting on this transformation, he stated, “In this moment, internally, we all changed, everything changed, life changed. It was a point of no-return.” The choice to wear a suit rather than military gear signifies more than just fashion; it represents a strategic effort to foster diplomatic relationships and convey a message of unity and resilience.
In recent months, Zelenskyy has donned Anisimov’s designs at various significant events, including the funeral of Pope Francis and a NATO summit held in June 2023. Both occasions played a crucial role in mending relations between the U.S. and Ukraine, particularly following the public tensions earlier in the year.
As diplomatic interactions continue to unfold, Zelenskyy’s sartorial choices will likely remain a focal point, reflecting not only his personal journey but also the broader narrative of Ukraine’s resilience and aspirations for peace.
