Qatar’s U-23 national football team clinched a place in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2026 by defeating Bahrain 2-1 in a thrilling match held at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium on Tuesday. The victory was marked by a dramatic penalty scored in the ninth minute of added time, capping off a successful qualifying campaign where Qatar won all three of their matches.

Bahrain initially took the lead with a goal from Abdulrahman Sami Al Khayyat in the 71st minute. However, Qatar staged a remarkable comeback, scoring two goals in stoppage time despite being down to ten players following a red card for Ayoub Mohamed Al Ouwi. This victory not only secured their spot in the tournament but also showcased the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

Players Reflect on the Hard-Fought Victory

Following the match, Mubarak Shanan, a forward for Qatar, emphasized the intense competition they faced. “It was difficult to face the strong Bahrain team, but we were able to defeat them and qualify for the Asian Cup,” he stated. Shanan praised the team’s ability to execute the coach’s strategies effectively under pressure.

Teammate Mohammed Siraj contributed significantly to the team’s success by scoring in all three Group H matches. He acknowledged the physical and mental challenges posed by playing three matches in a week. “We knew about the fatigue and pressure on us, but we finished it with a score of 2-1,” Siraj remarked.

Abdulaziz Mohammed echoed the sentiments of teamwork, stating, “Everyone gave their all. We played with one heart as one team, from the goalkeeper to the striker, and the substitutes did not fall short.” This collective effort was crucial in securing the win against a formidable opponent.

Bahrain’s Response and Future Prospects

Mubarak Mohammed praised Qatar’s performance. “Congratulations to the Qatari team. They put on a great match. We also put on a great match, but I think we lost focus at the end,” he said, reflecting on the match’s turning point.

With this victory, Qatar is now set to prepare for the draw of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, which will take place from January 7 to 25, 2026. They aim to compete against ten other group winners, four top runners-up, and the host nation, Saudi Arabia, in the prestigious 16-team tournament.

This impressive achievement not only highlights Qatar’s growing prowess in football but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting competition in the upcoming Asian Cup.
