Sheikh Joaan Elected OCA President, Unveils Vision for Unity
In a significant development for the Olympic Movement in Asia, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani was elected as the 22nd President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) on January 26, 2026. The election took place during the 46th OCA General Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with the participation of representatives from 45 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, HE Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Sheikh Joaan, who also holds the position of Senior Vice President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), presented his vision titled “Together for Asia.” This initiative aims to foster collaboration among the NOCs and enhance the Olympic framework across the continent.
Vision for a United Asia
Under the “Together for Asia” vision, Sheikh Joaan committed to several key objectives that underscore the importance of unity and development. These include:
- Strengthening solidarity and development throughout Asia.
- Supporting athletic excellence among athletes.
- Promoting good governance within sports organizations.
- Embracing innovation responsibly to enhance sports practices.
- Ensuring OCA events and programmes are sustainable, inclusive, and credible.
- Growing international representation to advocate for Asia’s interests.
- Positioning sport as a universal language of peace and cultural understanding.
Sheikh Joaan emphasized the significance of Asia’s diversity, stating, “Asia is the largest and most diverse continent within the Olympic family. This diversity is our greatest strength. But it also requires us to work in unity, guided by mutual respect and our shared commitment to the Olympic values.” He further highlighted that through unity, the continent can transform diversity into opportunity for the youth to excel on the global sporting stage.
“Together, let’s work towards a more united, stronger, and successful OCA. Together for Asia,” he stated, calling for cooperation among the NOCs to achieve these ambitious goals.
Acknowledging Leadership Transition
Sheikh Joaan’s election follows the decision of former OCA President Randhir Singh to step down due to health reasons. Sheikh Joaan expressed his gratitude for Singh’s leadership and contributions, saying, “I wish to express my sincere appreciation to my dear friend His Excellency Mr. Raja Randhir Singh for his leadership, vision, and tireless efforts during challenging times.”
As Sheikh Joaan begins his tenure, he is expected to bring a renewed focus on collaboration and innovation, aiming to elevate the Olympic movement across Asia. His leadership is anticipated to play a crucial role in shaping the future of sports in the region.
This election marks a pivotal moment for the OCA as it prepares to navigate the complexities of modern sport while promoting unity and excellence across Asia.
