Breakers Overcome JackJumpers in Overtime Thriller, 81-80
The New Zealand Breakers secured a vital overtime victory against the Tasmania JackJumpers, winning 81-80 on March 15, 2024, in Hobart. This win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Breakers, who had entered the match needing a turnaround after recent disappointing performances.
Led by Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who contributed 17 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, and four steals, the Breakers initially took control of the game and led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter. However, the JackJumpers fought back to level the scores in the final moments of regulation. Both teams struggled with turnovers, leading to a dramatic finish.
Decisive Moments in Overtime
In the extra period, Sam Mennenga emerged as a key player for the Breakers, scoring six quick points, including a pivotal lay-up that tied the game late in regulation. Jackson-Cartwright’s calm demeanor under pressure allowed him to execute critical plays, ultimately sealing the match with a decisive drive to the basket.
“We talk about playing with character and energy … I’m proud how they showed up and bounced back after a few difficult games, and that has to be the standard,”
said Breakers coach Petteri Koponen after the game. Despite struggling in their shooting performance, making only four of 25 three-point attempts and six free throws, the team maintained its focus and tenacity.
New Zealand’s victory improved their record to 8-13, while Tasmania remains in sixth place with a 9-12 record, despite losing all three encounters with the Breakers this season. The JackJumpers had been fresh off a strong win against Melbourne United but could not capitalize on their momentum against New Zealand.
Key Performers and Missed Opportunities
While the Breakers celebrated, the JackJumpers faced frustration as they failed to convert crucial opportunities. Bryce Hamilton led Tasmania with 23 points, including six three-pointers, but the team struggled with execution in the final moments. Hamilton lost control of the ball during a late possession, leading to a last-second shot that fell short.
In a game that featured intense back-and-forth action, Nick Marshall contributed significantly for Tasmania, scoring all 15 of his points by halftime. However, the team could not maintain its lead into the final quarter, as they allowed New Zealand to catch up and take the game into overtime.
JackJumpers coach Scott Roth expressed disappointment after the match, highlighting unforced errors and a reliance on three-point shots instead of attacking the basket. “It was a hell of a game; a battle, back and forth. Some crazy turnovers – unforced, self-inflicted wounds – and we fell in love with the three-point line and didn’t attack the rim enough,” he noted.
The Breakers’ victory serves as a significant morale booster as they look to build on their success in upcoming matches. With the playoff picture tightening, each game becomes increasingly critical for teams vying for position in the National Basketball League.
