Rob Thomas Delights Christchurch with Pop-Rock Extravaganza

American singer-songwriter Rob Thomas captivated audiences at the Te Pae Convention Centre in Christchurch on November 13, 2025, as part of his All Night Days Tour. This performance marked a significant milestone, being one of the first major international shows at the venue, showcasing a blend of polished pop-rock and engaging stage presence.

The evening began with a 30-minute set by New Zealand alt-pop artist Riiki Reid, who opened with tracks from her latest EP, Drench. Accompanied by a live drummer and backing tracks, Reid delivered a strong performance, although the bright lights initially created a slightly awkward atmosphere. Despite this, she showcased her vocal prowess and set an upbeat tone for the night ahead.

As the lights dimmed, Thomas took to the stage with his five-piece band, which included his son Maison on guitar and two powerful backing singers. They launched into “I Believe It,” a track from his new album, All Night Days. The setlist featured an appealing mix of solo hits such as “Her Diamonds” and “Lonely No More,” alongside classics from Matchbox Twenty, the band he co-founded. He acknowledged the upcoming 30th anniversary of their debut album, adding a nostalgic touch to the evening.

Throughout the concert, the 53-year-old artist engaged with the audience, sharing humorous reflections on his age and experiences in Christchurch. He encouraged concertgoers to feel free to sit or stand, quipping, “the point is, we have your money,” which drew laughter from the crowd.

One of the standout moments of the night was a stripped-back rendition of “Bent,” performed solo and acoustic. Despite a few false starts that Thomas laughed off, the intimate arrangement allowed his impressive vocal capabilities to shine. He also surprised the audience with a lively cover of Elvis Presley’s “That’s All Right” and an unexpected yacht-rock interpretation of “3AM,” complete with a saxophone.

The quasi-encore began with “All Night Days,” followed by a duet of “Under Pressure,” featuring backing singer Kim Dawson. The energy peaked with the iconic collaboration “Smooth,” a song originally performed with Santana, which had nearly everyone on their feet. The concert concluded with “This Is How a Heart Breaks,” after two hours of assured and entertaining showmanship.

Thomas’s performance not only highlighted his talent but also confirmed that Te Pae is a venue capable of hosting major international acts. He is set to wrap up his New Zealand tour at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington on November 15, with tickets still available through Ticketmaster.
