Sheikh Joaan Elected President of Olympic Council of Asia, Unveils Vision

On January 26, 2026, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani was elected as the 22nd President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during the 46th OCA General Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This election marks a significant moment in the Olympic Movement in Asia, which has been evolving since the inception of multisport Games in 1913.

The assembly witnessed participation from representatives of all 45 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) along with the President of Uzbekistan, HE Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Sheikh Joaan, who also holds the position of Senior Vice President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), articulated his vision titled “Together for Asia,” aimed at unifying efforts across the continent.

Vision for Unity and Progress

In his inaugural address, Sheikh Joaan emphasized the need for solidarity and development throughout Asia. He committed to several key objectives, including:

• Strengthening solidarity and development throughout Asia
• Supporting athletic excellence
• Promoting good governance
• Embracing innovation responsibly
• Ensuring sustainability in OCA events and programs
• Enhancing international representation to advocate for Asia’s interests
• Positioning sport as a universal language of peace and cultural understanding

Sheikh Joaan noted, “Asia is the largest and most diverse continent within the Olympic family. This diversity is our greatest strength. But it also requires us to work in unity, guided by mutual respect and our shared commitment to the Olympic values. Through unity, we transform diversity into opportunity. We empower our National Olympic Committees and we provide a platform for our youth to excel on the world’s sporting stage.”

He further urged stakeholders to collaborate towards a more united and successful OCA, stating, “Together for Asia.”

Transition of Leadership

Sheikh Joaan will fill the position for the remaining term following the resignation of former OCA President Randhir Singh, who stepped down due to health reasons. Sheikh Joaan expressed gratitude for Singh’s contributions, acknowledging his leadership during challenging periods. “I wish to express my sincere appreciation to my dear friend His Excellency Mr. Raja Randhir Singh for his leadership, vision, and tireless efforts during challenging times,” he said.

As the new president, Sheikh Joaan’s leadership is anticipated to foster an environment of collaboration and growth within the Asian sporting community, reinforcing the Olympic Council’s mission to enhance athletic participation across the continent.
