Breakers Dominate Bullets with 29-Point Victory in Ignite Cup
The New Zealand Breakers delivered a commanding performance against the Brisbane Bullets, winning 113-84 in the Ignite Cup at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre. This decisive victory follows their previous triumph over the Illawarra Hawks, solidifying the Breakers’ strong position in the Australian NBL’s in-season tournament.
With this win, the Breakers improved their record to 2-0 in the Ignite Cup, placing them well on the path toward securing one of the two finalist spots and competing for the A$400,000 prize. The team has now accumulated 13 out of a possible 14 points, while the Bullets dropped to a 5-8 record for the season.
Breakers’ Stellar Performance
Sam Mennenga was a standout for the Breakers, contributing a team-high 25 points and showcasing his skills with 10-of-16 shooting, along with 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. His performance has sparked conversations about him being a strong contender for the league’s most improved player award.
Import Izaiah Brockington also shone, scoring 19 points on an impressive 8-of-10 shooting. His offensive presence will be vital as the Breakers aim to maintain momentum. Parker Jackson-Cartwright added 15 points and 7 assists, while 18-year-old Karim Lopez, a promising Mexican NBA prospect, scored all 13 of his points in a dominant first half.
Rob Baker further contributed to the team’s success with a double-double, achieving 12 points and 11 rebounds, along with 3 steals. The Breakers’ shooting efficiency was remarkable, hitting 58% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc, sinking 12 of their 24 attempts.
Bullets Struggle Without Key Players
On the other hand, the Bullets struggled to find their rhythm, with Casey Prather being the only player to make a significant impact, scoring a team-high 26 points before leaving the game with a knee injury three minutes into the final quarter. He also recorded 8 rebounds and 4 assists, but his absence was felt as the Bullets failed to mount a comeback.
The final statistics revealed a dominant performance by the Breakers, who capitalized on the Bullets’ 17 turnovers and held them to just six made three-pointers on 34 attempts. The Breakers surged ahead early, finishing the first half with a commanding 68-36 lead, marking the third-highest scoring total in the NBL’s 40-minute era.
The Breakers’ 41-point second quarter was particularly notable, setting a record for the highest-scoring term in the league this season. As they look ahead, the Breakers will aim to build on this momentum and continue their pursuit of playoff contention in the NBL.
The next phase of the Ignite Cup promises to be competitive, and with the Breakers showing such strong form, they will be a team to watch in the coming weeks.
